📖 Synopsis

Ponman (2025) is a gripping and darkly humorous study of greed, tradition, and the weight of gold in Indian society. Set in the coastal town of Kollam, the story follows P.P. Ajesh (Basil Joseph), a unique "mobile gold dealer" who lends gold sovereigns to families for weddings, expecting repayment from the wedding gifts. The plot thickens when Ajesh lends 25 sovereigns of gold for the wedding of Steffi (Lijomol Jose). However, Steffi’s new husband, the intimidating and ruthless Mariano (Sajin Gopu), has no intention of returning the gold or paying the balance. What follows is a high-stakes, stressful game of cat-and-mouse as the seemingly "small" gold dealer Ajesh goes to extreme lengths to recover his property from a dangerous family. The film is a brilliant subversion of the typical hero-villain dynamic, presenting a world of "grey" characters fighting for survival.
