Coriolanus (2011) is a visceral, contemporary retelling of William Shakespeareβs tragic play, brought to life in a gritty, modern-day setting. The film marks the directorial debut of Ralph Fiennes, who stars as Caius Martius "Coriolanus", an arrogant yet brilliant Roman general who is more at home on the battlefield than in the political arena. After a bloody victory against the Volscian army and his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler), Coriolanus returns to Rome as a hero. Pushed by his ambitious mother, Volumnia (Vanessa Redgrave), he reluctantly seeks a position in the Senate. However, his open contempt for the common people and his refusal to play the "political game" lead to a massive riot. Betrayed and banished from his own city, Coriolanus does the unthinkable: he seeks out his mortal enemy, Aufidius. The two legendary warriors join forces to march back to Rome and exact a terrible revenge. With documentary-style cinematography and explosive action, this film proves that Shakespeare's themes of power, pride, and betrayal are timeless.
