Synopsis

Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is a mute, isolated woman who works as a cleaning lady in a high-security, secret government laboratory in Baltimore. Her life is a series of quiet, lonely routines until she and her colleague Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover the lab's most classified secret: a mysterious, scaled humanoid creature captured from the Amazon. The creature, referred to as "The Asset," is viewed as a primitive monster by the ruthless Colonel Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon), who wants to vivisect it for a Cold War advantage. However, Elisa sees the soul within the creature. She begins to visit him in secret, feeding him hard-boiled eggs and playing swing music on her portable record player. Through sign language and a shared sense of isolation, they form a bond that transcends words and species.
